MOTHER Fans: Please Find a Sense Of Humour

by Nadia on June 28th, 2008

No, really. Please do it. It’s a shame that you all feel the need to fly into Puritan rages over an RPG series known for its off-the-wall humour.

Today’s rant is brought to you by the already-controversial issue of Nintendo Power that gave us news about Mega Man 9 and an ill-conceived Castlevania fighting game.

Nintendo Power has become wily with their game previews. To get people excited about the future (so to speak), the magazine drops hints about cover stories that will appear in the next issue.

July’s preview of Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia was foretold by a full moon at the end of the June issue and for some reason Mother/Earthbound fans speculated that this was going to be some life-changing announcement about Mother 3 being made available in the States. Of course, it wasn’t.

Nintendo Power ran with the fans’ disappointment (they bring it upon themselves) with their preview for the September Issue:

NEXT MONTH: We’ll kick off the next 20 years of Nintendo Power with more big reveals including a top-secret cover story fit for a king. It’s got a lot of heart. Just kidding. It’s Mother 3. Just kidding. Please look forward to it.

I realise I’m only just recently out of the Earthbound closet so I haven’t had time to be hardened with teased-dog disappointment, but that got a laugh out of me.

The forces of Starmen.net are not pleased, however, calling the joke “cruel” and “sick.” Calling someone at work and telling them their wife is dead when she’s actually alive and knitting is a sick joke. This is more about poking fun at fanaticism.

“Sound like someone you know? Someone named you?

C’mon, guys. Lighten up. It’s all supposed to be about a boy in a red cap wielding a baseball bat with boyish spirit.

Oh and the possibility of eternity in a hellish black oblivion at the teeth of that Giygas thing.

5 opinions for MOTHER Fans: Please Find a Sense Of Humour

It’s not about being hardened, it’s about having invested way too much emotion into a video game. They have in essence softened themselves for things like this.

Incidentally, an official translation now would be ironic now that the fan translation is nearly complete.

A prerequisite for Mother fandom is a highly-tuned sense of martyrdom over insignificant things like video games and a thick-headed lack of humor. You know, pretty much being the opposite of the game you profess changed your life FOREVAR

See, it’s because of humor like this that I renewed my subscription since NP changed hands. Knowing that the Starmen are taking it so seriously is just making me laugh harder.

I bet at one point in time this was how die-hard Duke Nukem fans reacted to the mockery.

“Martyrdom” just about sums it up. I’ve never seen a fandom with so much stored up hate towards Nintendo, which is apparently “incapable” of releasing “anything new.”
